Start with the playing area, then plan the whole site

The FIP Rules of Padel effective 1 January 2026 specify an internal court size of 20 × 10 metres. They require at least 6 metres of unobstructed height and recommend 8 metres for new facilities. These are playing-space dimensions, not a complete land requirement. Read the official FIP rules.

Allow separately for the structure, circulation, accessible routes, maintenance access, spectator areas and any applicable out-of-court play requirements. The designer must check how the selected court model fits the actual plot or building. A drawing labelled 200 m² does not establish that an entire venue will fit.

Foundations and the existing surface

Provide a site survey, photographs, levels and any existing slab drawings to the project team. Foundation design must suit the court anchoring system and site conditions. Ask who is responsible for ground investigation, structural design, construction tolerances and acceptance before installation. An existing tennis court or hardstanding is not automatically a suitable foundation.

Drainage and outdoor exposure

Map existing drainage and where water can legally discharge. Ask the designer to coordinate the base, playing surface and surrounding levels so that the full system works together. Record exposure to wind, sun and the local environment when choosing the court specification. Do not infer suitability from the appearance of a similar court at another site.

Lighting and electrical preparation

Discuss intended opening hours, recreational or competition use, nearby properties and the electrical supply. Request a lighting layout that considers uniformity, glare and maintenance access. Confirm which party provides cabling, connection, controls and electrical inspection. Compare the complete lighting proposal rather than wattage alone.

Indoor height, roofs and covered courts

Measure clearance to beams, lights, ducts and other obstructions across the entire playing space. A roof or canopy needs its own design, drainage and approval review. Include ventilation, player comfort, access and building operating costs when comparing an indoor venue with outdoor courts. Compare indoor, outdoor and covered courts.

Converting a tennis court

Before deciding how many padel courts can fit, obtain a measured plan and review circulation, foundations, drainage, access and the permitted use. Existing fencing and lighting may require changes. Conversion feasibility depends on the site; do not rely on a universal tennis-to-padel court ratio.

Prepare the installation brief

Send IPG the location, measured site plan, photographs, proposed number of courts, indoor or outdoor setting and target opening date.
